The environmental benefits of Pouchlink can be categorized into 4 main areas:
Packaging
A pouch weighs around 9gms compared to a PET bottle which weighs up to 35gms and a 330ml glass bottle, which weighs around 220gms. That means around 75% less material is used to produce a pouch than a standard PET bottle.
Distribution
4 spools of pouches (1000 individual pouches) combined with 6 x 5 litre bag in box (up to 1200 individual drink portions) weighs approximately 37kgs. By comparison, 1000 ready to drink cans weighs around 380kgs. This is due to the fact that 95% of the ready to drink product transported is water and with Pouchlink, water is provided via the mains supply. In addition to weight, the weight of tightly spooled, flexible, linked pouches is around 85% less than the area mass of traditional ready-to-drink (RTD) packaging.
Cooling
The Pouchlink vending machine has a small, aluminium block, refrigeration unit that is cooling about 1 litre of water at any given time. Chilling mains water on demand is inherently more efficient than chilling a large, open, cabinet full of RTD products. When compared to a glass fronted vending machine (GFV), Pouchlink is around 5 times more energy efficient and uses around 20% of the energy consumed by a GFV.
Post Consumption
Made from PET and PE, the flexible pouch is fully recyclable. However, the reality in the UK is that there is a low uptake of closed or opens loop PET recycling in the UK. Therefore, the majority of PET containers end up in landfill and the flexible pouch, with its small footprint, uses around 15% of the space of a PET bottle. Going forward it will be possible to make flexible pouches from 100% recycled materials if required.

In particular, the healthy drinks options satisfy strict vending legislation in European schools. As a result, local education authorities, schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, businesses, health centres and leisure groups are queuing up to introduce the new vending system to their sites.

There is also growing interest from abroad, including the USA, the Far East and Australia. On top of this, the business has a strong ethical stance via its partnership with The One Foundation, a UK based registered charity that works with communities in Africa to support humanitarian needs including clean water. Each sale of ‘One Water’ via the Pouchlink system will help to fund PlayPump® water systems.
In effect, Pouchlink vending machines act like a mini drinks bottling factory, with everything carried out inside the machine. The Pouchlink design uses an innovative, patented link system with individual flexible pouches connected together. This means they can be packed in very high densities of up to 1,000 pouches at a time. These are all stored within the machine, along with the juice concentrates, which means it needs re-stocking much less frequently than conventional soft drinks vending machines.
There is also a built-in quality control system, which will only accept the correct measures of juice concentrate and water. The result is consistently high quality, great tasting drinks every time.
On top of this the machine cleans itself and each drink is guaranteed to be microbiologically safe. After each drink is made a volume of pure water flushes through the system to remove any traces of fruit concentrate. A second chemical-free, ozone cleaning process also takes place at set intervals during the night to sterilise all of the internal pipe work.
